Aggressive or Assertive: You Tell Me

Do you agree or disagree?

"For women, the point of life is to make connections. They'd rather cooperate than compete. They want everyone to cross the finish line at the same time, preferably holding hands." - Bridget Brennan, managing director of Speaking Female, a marketing company owned by Zeno Public Relations in Chicago.

I know I don't really want to hold hands, but that doesn't mean I won't give one to help you cross the finish line. Cooperate or compete? Can't we do both?

I cannot find any research to support that frequently held view and feel that it is more likely that we have different styles of relating, collaborating and competing, and that the key to success at work is to recognize and adapt to the differences.

One of my favorite books on part of that theme is Pierre Mornell's classic, Passive Men and Wild, Wild Women.

I also disagree with one of John Gray's related views, that women talk to be heard and men to solve problems. It is more likely - at least at work - that both sexes want both.

The secret to inspiring happy, higher-performing behavior is to bring out their bette (temperament + talent) side, then they naturally see and support yours... easier said then done.

Now I'll get off the soapbox... congrats Susan on being among the first of the bureaus to have a blog. This is exciting.

welcome to the blogging world, susan!

I've had enough hand holding and kumbaya singing to last a lifetime. I prefer "power boosts" and competitive rock climbing between women (literally and figuratively). We women need to call each other into action. We need to urge each other towards achievement...and spur each other on (with a gentle impish grin and inspirational push instead of a painful cattle prod).
